M-ASA owns and operates the Mid Atlantic Soaring Center (W73) airport at Fairfield, PA. The facility is 119 Acres in the rolling countryside just south of historic Gettysburg and is located adjacent to Ski Liberty.
Surrounded by wide open farm fields, the location provides excellent spring, summer and fall thermal soaring, as well as excellent mountain wave conditions. Some of the best ridges in the east coast are accessible from the Mid Atlantic Soaring Center during the fall, winter and spring seasons. Numerous 1000 Km flights have been made from this site.
Our club activities at Mid Atlantic Soaring Center include flight training, extensive cross country flying, a friendly club “task” competition, and hosting of the SSA Regional Sailplane Racing Contest.
The airport has a 2700 ft. paved runway with an adjacent turf runway and paved taxiways. It includes a main hangar with a clubhouse, and enclosed glider trailer storage buildings.
The Main hangar is an open hangar for the storage of club owned gliders and members privately owned gliders. The M-ASA clubroom which is attached to the main hangar has bathrooms, showers, a kitchen, and a meeting room.
There are three trailer storage buildings for the storage of member owned gliders stored in their trailers. A total of 52 trailers can be stored in these buildings. The buildings are secured and provide access to any glider trailer without disturbing others.
A rental fee is charged to members storing gliders in either the main hangar or the trailer buildings. Members may tie down gliders in designated locations for outdoor storage at a small rental charge. They may also store their glider trailers outdoors on site in designated areas at no charge.
A small number of camp sites are available for members, some with electrical power available. There are no water hookups or sewer connections available. Members may pitch tents and campout on the gliderport grounds in designated locations. The bathrooms and showers are available to members who wish to camp at the gliderport. A small rental fee is charged for the camp sites.
Remote Controlled Airplanes and Quadcopters – sometimes we are asked if RC or Quads can be flown on our airport. Sorry, due to safety concerns and in compliance with the Academy of Model Aeronautics National Model Aircraft Safety Code models are not compatible with general aviation aircraft. Instead, please contact your local RC club and fly at their site. Thanks!
